I missed the information in the description that this was more fantasy than anything. I thought this was a typical time travel romance of 'humans' from different centuries. Couldn't have been more wrong. I had an extremely difficult time getting through the first few chapters since this is not of my usual genre. However, I kept with it and did finish the entire extremely long novel. Lots of interesting characters and 'creatures' for lack of a better word. There are definitely editing issues that could be addressed but not enough to be too annoying. I think most fantasy fans would enjoy this. I personally debated between 3 and 4 stars and am giving it 4 for creativity and know I'm not a usual fan of this story type. Some of this is very odd, for example the number of times she desires to 'lick the chest' of a good looking male is really strange to me. Do other women think like that? Many portions are repetitive as well and it is hard to follow at times. I did laugh several times with the sarcasm and banter but nothing brought me to tears.Tags : Shadows of the Keeper (Chronicles of the Keeper Book 1) - Kindle edition by Karey Brown. Shadows of the Keeper Chronicles of the Keeper Book 1 edition by Karey Brown Romance eBooks Reviews
When I first started to read this book, I didn't understand what was going on. Then, as I got further along in the story, I couldn't put it down. When I finished the book, there were still some things that were not totally clear to me, so I turned to the beginning to check out a few things and found that I couldn't put it down AGAIN! The characters seem complicated at first, but all becomes clear as the story progresses. I don't doubt that I will be reading this one again in the future.
I really enjoyed this book. Yes, at times I found it a little hard to follow and had to re-read sections and yes, there are some typos, incorrect words and bad grammar which is why I gave it 4 starts instead of 5. But I still found myself caught up in the story. I read at night - later than I should, I read during my lunch break at work, I read in the car at stop lights and traffic backups & I read while cooking dinner. It's fantasy, romance and a little bit of comedy rolled into one. There were times I laughed out loud at some of the antics and sarcasm from some of the characters (primarily Emily).
I would really like to see the story continue, maybe a book about Broc and/or a book further into the future about Aedan and Kendara. And maybe more info on where the Lumynari were from.
I agree with so many other reviews about the slow start to this book. Not only slow, but at times mind-boggling confusing! I didn't understand, or didn't realize who was speaking, or just plain lost track of the different characters. I almost gave up on the darn book....
But reading the reviews is really what kept me going and it soon picked up its momentum and I started to grasp what was going on, meaning I got answers to my questions. This really was a well thought out story, and unique to anything I've ever read. I am glad I picked this up and thought the author did a great job with her story telling and in-depth descriptions.
While the first ten pages left me a trifle lost--I read them three times. After each, I turned to a hardcover on my to-read stack in my office--the last time, however, I got past the 3600 years ago, and the story made sense to me. I hardly let my of my site for three days and most nights and digested the entire book with amazement and wonder. It is a fabulous read, different from most in originality, and delicious in love and sexuality without being gross. A terrific book that I recommend highly.
I usually dont bother to write a review, a star rating is my norm but i had to write one for this book. First off the beginning is very confusing. There were so many names thrown out that I had no idea to whom they belonged to that I very nearly gave up. Secondly the way people were introduced were as if I already knew who they were and what relationship they had to other characters. Fourthly there seemed to be missing words in alot of sentences like A,THE, THERE and THEN. I was constantly rearranging sentences in my head as I read. Fifthly the ending was way to abrupt for such a drawn out story, whatever became of Shadow?. Despite all these negatives I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline and wanted to know more, an epilogue would have been nice. There was insight into many characters that developed them nicely and I loved the chemistry and rapport between Emily and Dez. Overall the negatives only had me taking away one star, I think that shows just how much I enjoyed the storyline.
Parts of this book made me giggle like mad. But the story has major issues.
The story-telling is very uneven, tends to drag on and then suddenly speed ahead. Roughly the first half of the book tells one story, then everything nearly reverses into similar tale, version 2.
Throughout, the heroine is an unbelievably naive, whiny brat of a snit only to suddenly morph momentarily either into a witty conversationalist or a raging (literally) magic-wielding b!tch - then back to a snit. We hear considerably too much mental muttering about how sexy the hero(s) are, her fantasies, or how upset she is about (fill in the blank). At first it's entertaining. But trust me, it becomes tiring chapter after chapter. If you have teenagers going through hormonal angst, magnify that hundredfold and you'll understand what I mean.
Grammatically, this story needs a good editor and proof-reader. Wrong words (spell-check can only catch misspellings, not misuse) and awkward phrasing - even if it *is* to denote a foreign/ancient cadence - dog the pages and slow reading. When a sentence makes so little sense that you must re-read it several times to understand what it says, the reading experience suffers.
If you are the sort to not pay much attention to *how* something is told, character development, or plot pacing, you will enjoy this book. It *does* have a great deal of potential.
