Eight knockout stories about women who know what "authentic" is really all about.

Poached is not an option Carol Wobig 9781479139125 Books

The illuminating cover of Poached is Not an Option says it all: come on in, sit down and prepare to be delighted. In this anthology of eight remarkable stories, award winning author Wobig takes us on soulful journeys in the rural landscape of Wisconsin, but these stories are so relatable, they could be set anywhere. In them you will identify neighbors, a church member, bar patrons. The deft balance of spare narrative and spicy dialogue is used skillfully, and there is a pathos in each story that strikes a humorous sadness, a happy/sad so rarely achieved in writing. These stories are vibrant, and fly from the pages as easily as a Grace Paley, Lorrie Moore, or Alice Munro story might. My only disappointment was there are only eight stories! I can hardly wait to see what Carol Wobig will include in her next collection. I highly recommend this book, you will finish them in an afternoon. Then want to turn back to page one and start over again. They are that great.

This is a poignant collection of stories that draws the reader in quickly. The feelings of the characters are very identifiable. I look forward to more of Carol Wobig's witty storytelling!
Carol Wobig's characters are the 99 percent - people who live in trailer homes, four-plexes, farmhouses without indoor toilets. The broken families in her stories are pressed together by fear, by poverty, and by love they find it hard to express. She writes wryly, in a spare, accurate voice about people named Agnes, Ruby and Eunice, who live quiet lives that are full of unsettled conflicts, even fright. To stand upright on the face of the earth is not an easy thing, she seems to say. This is Raymond Carver territory, and her eye and ear are just that sharp. Carol Wobig leaves you thinking. Highly recommended.

Carol Wobig's new collection of short stories is brilliant! Each story is a carefully crafted journey with words metered to perfection. Nothing is superfluous in these finely tuned vignettes. Each phrase and detail is layered and integral to the way Ms. Wobig draws in the reader and holds his attention to what slowly unwinds. She is able to relate everyday occurrences with such pathos and profound honesty. At times the work is hauntingly sad, and yet I was driven to continue to the next tale, hoping to explore more of my own shuttered feelings. This was the first book that I downloaded through the App on my iPhone, secretly stealing moments at work, hoping to get in one more chapter before being discovered. I just can't wait for what comes next from this hugely talented author.
From twelve year old Alice in the first story, to seventy-eight year old Anita in the last, Carol Wobig deftly pulls her readers into the lives of women we can recognize. With humor and pathos, we dive into the worlds of blue collar, midwestern women dealing with issues anyone can find something to relate to a mentally ill mother, finding a voice when the world puts you down, a troubled child, single parenting, emotional overeating.... I was left with only one minor complaint when I finished -- it was too short! Give me more Wobig - I love reading crisp, clean, tight sentences and stories crafted by a master. Please, once you've read this collection and enjoyed it, let your reading friends know about it. It would be a shame if this work does not get read!!
The stories in this collection caught me by surprise. From the young girl stepping off the school bus to find her life forever changed to the newly-widowed Anita standing on the threshold of life without her beloved Wally, Wobig gets inside her characters' skin and makes the reader love them. Deceptively simple, each story is like a little individually-wrapped glimpse into the human heart with all its longing, heartache and victory. Read this collection slowly to get the full effect of Wobig's sharply-focused style. Nothing here is superfluous!
Carol Wobig's collection of short stories Poached is Not an Option is the ideal summer read. The eight tales hang together like a string of pearls, each one beautiful and perfectly made. Wobig effortlessly weaves both the odd and familiar together—regular people in extraordinary circumstances. Her skill as a writer and her deep understanding of people are evident in Poached is Not and Option. You can download Carol Wobig's book through .
Carol Wobig's eight stories in this collection have stayed with me long after I turned the last page. With a clarity and simplicity of language that most writers only dream of, she gives us a glimpse of the complexity of what it means to be alive. Whether it's a mother who watches helplessly as her son can't stop washing his hands, a grandmother-to-be navigating a complex relationship with her daughter, or a twin learning to live without her sister, every story has at its core human relationships and is told free from judgment and sentimentality. Very re-readable.
