A thrilling action packed ride wraps up the series. I've loved this series from the first book. Hooked on Jim Morgan's Mercenaries and Noelle's Assassins who one by one fell for each other along with their bosses who finally put a 20 year feud between them to rest to admit they love each other too. It's fitting that the last book in the series be about Jim's daughter and also about two of his mercenaries who have been fighting their attraction to each other for many books.Cate Morgan was hidden from her father for 17 years by her grandfather. Kept basically a prisoner in his mansion and forced to go and see her brain dead mother every day at his command. She is finally freed from that life by her Dad when he finds out about her. But in her eyes she basically traded one prison for another as Jim who is afraid of losing her keeps a tight protective barrier around her to the point she feels suffocated. The only bright thing was Ash – the rookie mercenary who worked for her father. But his guilt at first over the age difference and then his loyalty to her father had him refusing to be any more than a friend to her, breaking her heart.
Liam Macgregor and Sullivan Port were both partners and best friends on Jim's team. They were so close they even shared women. But after Sullivan was kidnapped and tortured a line was crossed when Liam was trying to help him and it shattered their friendship and ended with Sullivan leaving the team which shortly after Liam left also and returned to Boston.
Book picks up roughly two years after the last one with Cate now a freelance photographer going to dangerous places to get the shot of a lifetime. This currently has her in a South American country that has been overrun by the cartels. She ends up getting herself in a bad situation and calls her father for help. Ash who has always secretly loved Cate tags along on the rescue. Things don't go as planned and Jim is almost mortally wounded saving Cate.
All of the previous characters in the series converge to the small town to seek vengeance against the cartel family that tried to kill Cate and wounded Jim and also to be there in case their leader doesn't pull through.
I love how this author writes a story – the action is edge of your seat – the bad guys are ruthless – your heartbroken over the casualties lost – the sexual tension leading up to the couples finally coming together is thick and when they finally get together its hot hot hot.. And of course you come to care about all the characters.
Cate was both a little scared and immature when we first met her at 17 and had some hard lessons still to learn before the end of this book but she is her father's daughter and she whethered them all and grew into a smart tough woman. Liam and Sully's journey to happiness involved Sully having to let his past go and believe in love again along with both him and Liam admitting their sexuality had crossed from bi to only love for each other and admitting that to friends and Liam's Irish Catholic family.
I'm sad this is the end but it was a great journey and I am very happy with how it concluded.

Midnight Target A Killer Instincts Novel Book 8 edition by Elle Kennedy Romance eBooks Reviews
HOT, HOT, HOLY HOTNESS -- Could you read as a stand alone? NOT RECOMMENDED.. So much has happened in previous books that you would not understand everything. Although Elle does give some back story, you will not truely connect with these characters by reading this book alone. I think I followed this entire serious for Sully and Liam alone.. WOW...
The entire serious is INTENSE and HOT !!!
This story focuses on Jim Morgan's daughter Cate. Who knew the mercenary even had a daughter. The books in this series are stand alone, but all of the books (7) starting with Midnight Rescue have a teaser at the end where you'd want to read the next in the series. This is Elle Kennedy's best series. In fact, I read the whole series twice.
I am sad that this is the last in the series, but what a fantasic wrap up. Two strong story lines, Ash/Cate and Liam/Sully. Both are well developed, not rushed and brought to believable conclusion. I have been patiently waiting for Liam & Sully and finally their story unfolded showing compassion, love, understanding and acceptance. Ash/Cate go through challenges, both personal and professional, and end up growing together. Great book!
I'm so sad that this series is over. I have loved every character and every story. I wish their was more to the romance between Ash and Cate. There seemed to be more passion than love, but Sully and Liam made up for that. Liam and Sully have had some intense passionate moments but all that was underlying the true feelings of love they had for each other. The epilogue filled me with warm fuzzy feelings for my favorite couples.
5+ Stars for a Finally HEA for Liam and Sully! ... and Cate and Ash too...
Wow, what an amazing ride. This book had 2 loves stories that we've all been waiting for over the last few books. It started out with action and kept going with heartbreak, angst, suspense twists, murder and more action as we come to expect from this series. I loved Cate and Ash and how they both had strength and loyalty. It was great to see Ash finally stand up for her and see her as the strong woman she grew into. Sully and Liam had so much hurt and angst, I was rooting for their HEA. Finally! This series was amazing and I'm sorry to see it end, but loved it! Elle Kennedy you hit it out of the park with this finale! This is a must read. If you haven't, then start at the beginning, you won't be sorry.
I believe this is the last book of the Midnight Series by Elle Kennedy. I strongly suggest one read the books in order. Doing so will allow one to gain perspectives on these dynamic characters and appreciate the culmination of what occurs in this book. There is something so real, relatable and raw about what these characters are going through that it would be a disservice to miss Kennedy's earlier contributions (all her books in my opinion, are exceptional thus it would be wise to start with the first Midnight book and work your way to Midnight Target).
I took minor issue with the ending regarding the antagonist; there was intense, explosive buildup throughout the book between the antagonist and the rest of the team that fizzled out when it should have mattered the most. Nevertheless, I LOVED almost everything about this book; especially the honest and inspiring growth of the characters in Kennedy's Midnight series. Kennedy's writing is so crafty; she can build a world that effortlessly draws the reader into this space that is so full of history, love, life, loss and possibility. I didn't want the book to end.
Of all the Midnight books by E.K. this was my least favorite. First is was drawn out much too long. And secondly it's not so much I minded the gay love but it just seems like those love and sex scenes went on and on and on,page after page. I had to skip so many pages. If I wanted to read M/M love I would have picked a book from that genre. It was unnecessary to clutter this book with their torrid love scenes. The rest of the book was good,a lot of adventure.
